When is the best time to visit for a hunting safari?
The South African hunting season runs from approximately March through October, with the cooler, dry winter months of May to August being the most popular. During this period the bush thins out considerably, improving visibility and making it easier to spot and stalk game. Gaspare Spanio Safaris operates on our private 3,000-hectare game farm in Limpopo, so we can tailor the timing to your target species and personal preferences.
How long should I plan for my safari?
Most hunting safaris run between five and ten days, depending on the number of species on your wish list and whether you plan to combine hunting with sightseeing. A seven-day safari is the most popular choice and allows a comfortable pace with time to pursue multiple trophies. We are happy to arrange shorter or longer trips to suit your schedule.
What should I expect on a typical hunting day?
Your day begins with an early-morning wake-up call, a hearty breakfast, and a briefing with your Professional Hunter. You will head out at first light when game is most active, return to the lodge for a midday break and lunch, and then hunt again during the productive late-afternoon hours. Evenings are spent around the fire pit sharing stories and enjoying a traditional South African braai or prepared dinner.

What is the lodge like?
Our lodge is a comfortable, purpose-built safari camp set in the heart of our private game farm in Limpopo. What meals are included during my stay?
All meals are included in your safari package — breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks in the field. We can accommodate dietary requirements with advance notice. Beverages including local beers, wines, and soft drinks are available at the lodge.
Are families and non-hunting guests welcome?

Is there Wi-Fi and mobile phone signal at the lodge?
The lodge has Wi-Fi access for guests, though speeds are typical of a rural African bush setting — fine for email and messaging, but not ideal for streaming. Mobile phone signal (Vodacom and MTN networks) is generally available in the area. We encourage guests to disconnect and enjoy the experience, but we understand the need to stay in touch.
What should I pack for my stay?
Pack neutral-coloured, layered clothing suitable for warm days and cool mornings — Limpopo temperatures can range from near freezing on winter mornings to over 25°C by midday. What hunting methods do you offer?
We offer both rifle hunting and bow hunting on our property. The primary method is spot-and-stalk, where you and your Professional Hunter walk the bush on foot, reading tracks and using the terrain to close the distance on your quarry. This is fair-chase hunting at its finest — physically engaging, ethically sound, and deeply rewarding.
What species are available to hunt?
Our 3,000-hectare Limpopo game farm supports a wide variety of plains game species including kudu, impala, blue wildebeest, gemsbok, warthog, zebra, nyala, and many more. What are the typical success rates?
Thanks to healthy game populations on our well-managed private farm and the skill of our Professional Hunters, success rates are extremely high — most hunters take every animal on their wish list. Of course, this is real hunting, and we never guarantee a specific outcome. Our team’s intimate knowledge of the property and its game movements gives you the best possible chance.
How experienced are your Professional Hunters?
Gaspare Spanio and his team of Professional Hunters hold all required South African licences and have decades of combined experience guiding clients from around the world. Is bow hunting practical in the Limpopo bush?
Yes, Limpopo’s mix of bushveld and open clearings is well suited to bow hunting. We maintain strategically placed blinds near waterholes and feeding areas that allow bow hunters to get within effective range. Spot-and-stalk bow hunting is also possible for experienced archers. Your PH will advise on the best approach for each species on your list.
Can I combine hunting with a photographic safari or sightseeing?
We are happy to build rest days or non-hunting activities into your itinerary. Many guests choose to visit Kruger National Park, which is within driving distance of our farm, for a photographic game drive. Firearms & Equipment
How do I import my firearm into South Africa?
South Africa requires all visiting hunters to apply for a Temporary Import Permit (SAPS 520) for their firearms. We will provide you with the necessary invitation letter and guide you through the application process, which must be completed before arrival. At OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you will clear your firearms through the South African Police Service desk — the process is routine and typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.
What calibers do you recommend for plains game?
For most plains game species in Limpopo, a .308 Winchester or .30-06 Springfield is an excellent all-round choice. If you are targeting larger species such as eland or blue wildebeest, a .300 Winchester Magnum provides extra insurance at longer ranges. We recommend premium bonded or monolithic bullets for reliable penetration on African game — your PH can advise on specific loads for each species.
Do you offer rental rifles?
Yes, Gaspare Spanio Safaris can arrange quality rental rifles for guests who prefer not to travel with their own firearms. This eliminates the hassle of import permits and airline firearms policies entirely. Please let us know well in advance so we can have the appropriate caliber and setup ready for your arrival, including time for sighting in.
What about ammunition — should I bring my own?
We recommend bringing your own preferred ammunition, as South Africa permits visiting hunters to import up to 200 rounds of ammunition per caliber. This ensures you are shooting the load your rifle is sighted in with. If you are using a rental rifle, we will supply quality ammunition matched to the firearm. Either way, you will have the opportunity to confirm your zero at our range before heading into the field.
What other equipment should I bring?
Beyond your firearm, we suggest bringing quality binoculars (8×42 or 10×42), a comfortable daypack, hearing protection, and a range finder if you have one. All other hunting equipment — shooting sticks, blinds, and field gear — is provided by Gaspare Spanio Safaris. If you are a bow hunter, bring your own bow, arrows, and broadheads, as these are personal-fit items.
Pricing & Packages
What is included in the daily rate?
Your daily rate covers accommodation at our lodge, all meals and standard beverages, the services of a dedicated Professional Hunter, a tracker, a hunting vehicle, and field preparation of trophies. Airport transfers between OR Tambo International Airport and the farm are also typically included in our hunting packages. The daily rate does not include trophy fees, which are charged separately based on animals taken.
How do trophy fees work?
Trophy fees are charged per animal harvested and are separate from the daily rate. You only pay for what you take — if you do not shoot an animal, there is no trophy fee for that species. Current trophy fees for all available species are listed on our trophy price list. This structure lets you build a hunt that matches your budget while keeping your options open in the field.
What payment methods do you accept and when is payment due?
We accept bank wire transfers in US dollars, and we can also accommodate other major currencies by arrangement. A 50% deposit is required to confirm your booking, with the balance due before the end of your safari. Full payment details and banking information are provided with your booking confirmation.
Are there any hidden costs I should budget for?
We believe in transparent pricing and will outline all expected costs upfront. Items outside the daily rate and trophy fees that you should budget for include: taxidermy and trophy shipping, staff gratuities, personal travel insurance, international flights, and any additional excursions or extra days. We will provide a detailed cost estimate so there are no surprises.
Do you offer packages for first-time African hunters?

Trophy Handling & Export
What happens to my trophies after the hunt?
Once an animal is harvested, our experienced skinners prepare the trophy in the field and at our on-site facility. The raw capes and skulls are then transported to a professional taxidermist for either full mounting or dip-and-pack treatment, depending on your preference. Gaspare Spanio Safaris coordinates the entire process so you can focus on enjoying your safari.
What is dip and pack?
Dip and pack is the process of treating raw hides, skulls, and horns with a government-approved insecticide solution, allowing them to be legally exported. This is the most common and cost-effective option for hunters who want to have their taxidermy work done by their own taxidermist back home. The process is carried out by certified facilities and includes all necessary veterinary and export documentation.
How long does it take to receive my trophies?
From the date of your hunt, you can typically expect dip-and-pack trophies to arrive at your door within four to eight months, depending on your home country’s import requirements and shipping schedules. Fully mounted trophies take longer — usually eight to twelve months — as the taxidermy work must be completed before shipping. We will keep you updated on the status throughout the process.
Are there any species that require CITES permits?
Certain species such as crocodile, elephant, and some other protected animals require CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) permits for export. Most of the plains game species available on our Limpopo property do not require CITES documentation. We will advise you before your hunt if any species on your wish list has special permit requirements and handle the paperwork on your behalf.
Can you recommend a taxidermist?
We work with several reputable taxidermists in South Africa who produce world-class mounts at competitive prices. We are also happy to prepare your trophies for dip and pack if you prefer to use a taxidermist in your home country. Either way, we will ensure your trophies are handled with the care and quality they deserve.
Travel & Logistics
Which airport should I fly into?
Most international guests fly into OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg, which is the main international gateway to South Africa. From there, Gaspare Spanio Safaris arranges a road transfer to our game farm in Limpopo, which takes approximately three to four hours through beautiful South African countryside. Alternatively, we can arrange a connecting flight to a regional airstrip closer to the property.
Do I need a visa to visit South Africa?
Many nationalities — including citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, most EU countries, Canada, and Australia — do not require a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. You will need a passport valid for at least 30 days beyond your intended departure date with at least two blank pages. We recommend checking with your nearest South African embassy or consulate for the most current entry requirements.
Is malaria a concern in Limpopo?
Parts of Limpopo province are classified as a low-risk malaria area, particularly during the warmer, wetter summer months (November to April). During the peak hunting season (May to August), malaria risk is significantly reduced due to the cold, dry conditions. We recommend consulting your travel health professional about prophylaxis and taking standard precautions such as using insect repellent during dawn and dusk.
Do I need travel insurance?

How do airport transfers work?
We will meet you at OR Tambo International Airport after you have cleared customs and the SAPS firearms desk. Our team will assist with your luggage and firearms and drive you directly to the farm. On departure, we will return you to the airport in plenty of time for your flight and help ensure your firearms are checked back in smoothly. Transfer details are confirmed before your arrival.
What currency should I bring?
The local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR), but US dollars are widely used in the safari industry and are our standard invoicing currency. We recommend carrying a modest amount of South African Rand for personal purchases, tips, and curios. ATMs are available in nearby towns, and most major credit cards are accepted in larger shops and fuel stations in the region.
